City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue spokesperson Theo Layne said the centre was evacuated following the structural collapse.
“The City’s Fire & Rescue Servi ces responded to a call out to Somerset Mall shortly after 12pm this afternoon, after a section of the roof collapsed. One person sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment,” Layne said.
Somerset Mall’s marketing manager Wiedaad Adams said no serious injuries were reported. “At 11:23 this morning, a portion of the ceiling in a passageway collapsed. Due to the area being cordoned off before the collapse, there were no serious injuries as a result of the incident.”
Adams said centre management and Occupational Health and Safety officials were on site to determine the cause of the incident and to assess the damage.
“The area between Entrance 1 and up until and including the Edgars court has been closed until a full assessment can be done. Clean up operations are underway,” Adams said.
She said all other areas of the mall were once again fully operational.
It’s the second such incident at the shopping centre in two years. Last June, the mall was evacuated after parts of the roof collapsed due to heavy rains.
